BOYS ON FARMS

(Press Assn.-

PARENTS COMPLAIN IN CONNECTION WITH CONDITIONS AN OFFICIAL REPLY

— By Telegraph — Copyright).

Auckland, Tuesday. Since the publication of a state- . ment by the s&cretary of the Boys' Emplo'yment Committee, Mr. N. G. Gribble, that he had more farm jobs available than he could find boys for, he hasi received a number .of letters from parents, including some fathers of unemployed boys, bitteidy 'complaining of the conditions and prospects ohsfarms. Replying to these objections, Mr. Gribble said it was nothing short of disaster that owing to a wrong attitude of mind scocea of openings in good farming homes had not been filled. The reasons seemed to be the cost of outfit, the remote chance of becoming the owner of a farm, the poor wages, and the general uhattractivoness of country life.. He pointed out "that clothes were needed in the city too, and the. prospect °f proprietorship was better on a farm than in most other callings. ' The most common cause of complaint was the wages offered, but it was difficult to understand how a lad without experience could expect to be worth more than 5s weekly and board to start. He concluded by declaring that healthy lads should be placed on the land with the least possible delay. Farming was a man's job, and its rewards were considerable.
