-By Telegraph— CnpjTlgtit).
Rec. July 25, 7.25: p.m., Madrid', July 25. Five hundred arrests, including those of a number of women, throughout Spain followed the discovery of a widespread anti-Government plot. Intense police activity foiled the design which Was to cause a rising by Fascists, Monarchists, Syndicalists and Anarchists. The police throughout Monday raided the residences of suspects, including lawyers, journalists, students, priests and politicians. Two priests were arrested in Granada. They were saying- Mass when the police arrived, j but were allowed to continue the j celebration after which they sur- j rendered. Unrest has been prevalent in the j south, particularly in S'eville for j some days. Communist meeting have ! been banned and Syndicalists and Labour organisations have been closed in several ofher cities. A premature bomb explosicn near Cadiz on Sunday night is believed to have aroused the suspicions of the authorities. Sixty-three of the 117 arrested in Madrid were taken to the penal settlement at Ocana. It is believed. that the Monarchists prepared a violent movement as a protest against the severe laws imposed. The Monarchists doubtless took advantage of the opportunity to attempt to overthrow the republic. The trial has begun in Barcelona of 42 Communists who are charged v/ith participation in the Prassa re- | volutionary move of 18 months ago. The prosecution is demanding a life sentence.
