FAMOUS HOME OF OPERA
The extended lease of the Covent Garden Opera House, London, famous alike for its perfect acoustics and for its great singing traditions, has, or is about to expire, and unless early action is taken there is every prospect that the theatre will be demolished. Indeed, tentative plans for shops and offices to occupy the site have already been prepared. It was recently stated that Covent Garden Properties, Ltd., to whom the opera house helongs, is willing to part with the freehold for £250,000, or to grant a new lease at about £18,000 a year, which, although a large sum compared with theatre rents paid in. recent years, is not considered excessive. Although the loss of Englands home of opera would be irreparable, there was no word until recently of any negotiations to save it.
