CLUB FINALS

SHAMROCKS BEAT MOUREA AFTER VERY EVEN GAME SUCCESS FOR ARAWA With the two games played at the Government Grounds on Saturday afternoon, the club competitions of the Rotorua Ladies' Hockey Assoeiation for the present season were finalised. By defeating Mourea, Shamrocks followed up their success in winning the Robertson Cup, by also securing the Wairua-a-Rangi Cup, while the losers gained posse-s-sion of the K. Carnachan Rosebowl as the runners-up in the final competition. The results of Saturday's matches were as follows: — Shamrocks, 2 beat Mourea, nil. Arawa 2, beat Taniwha 1. Mourea's Determined Stand Requiring a win to draw level with Shamrocks in the competition, Mourea started strongly and gave the impression that little would separate the teams at the end of the match. By the agency of hard hitting they continually worked into Shamrock territory and the latter team's backs were called upon to defend strenuously. Shamrocks, however, were short in goal and in consequence of the Mourea wings standing offside, the Shamrock's goal was never seriously endangered. After the first ten minutes, Shamrocks regained some of the lost advantage and made a number of attacks which, however, were also spoilt by offside play in the forward line. Until halftime, when no score had been registered, play was of an even nafure, the advantage fluctuating between the teams. On one. occasion Shamrocks went close to scoring, obstruction practically on the goal-line permitting Mourea to clear. Throughout the spell Shamrocks had failed to show their usual combination. The early stages of the second half were very similar to the first and at times each side conceded penalty corners when pressed in the cirele. Offside play which had to some extent spoilt the early part of the game was less prevalent in this spell, but the backs of each side were doing good work in defence. It was not until the last ten minutes of the game, that the possibility of a scoreless draw was shattered, the Shamrock forwards infusing more effort into their play and holding Mourea on defence in the circle. From one of these attacks, N. Worrall centred into the circle and intercepting the ball in flight, W. Mitchell skied the ball to the corner of the Mourea goal. With a rush of Shamrock forwards into the goal mouth, the Mourea goalie lost sight of the ball on tho fall and allowed an easy goal to be scored. This was an unfortunate reverse for Mourea, but before long Shamrocks were back again and a good piece of work by E. Mitchell, who had rnoved up into the right inside J position, saw he.r complete the move- , ment with a stinging ground shot I from the edge of the circle which gave the Mourea goalie no chance. Shamrocks were now definitely on I top and the game ended shortly afterj wards with no alteration in the posiI tion. Mr. C. J. Casey was the referee. Shamrocks 2, Mourea nil. Arawa v. Taniwha In the game between Arawa and ' Taniwha, good play was also evident at times and each team had its fair measure of attacking movements. For the Arawa side, J. Chaytor, who in playing as right half was out of her aceustomed position on the le.ft, played an outstanding attacking and defensive game and was the pivot of the team. Following a very even game in which the issue might have gone to either side, Arawa ran out the winners by two goals to one, R. Haupapa and J. Chaytor scoring for the winners, and R. Morgan from a penalty corner for Taniwha. The referee was Mr. A. C. Watts. Arawa 2, Taniwha 1.

points to nil in! itwelve a-side match, the losers fielded only ten players and evened up the team by borrowing players from their opponents. The game was uninteresting. Okere lost to Kaharoa after an even and ragged display, the score being 9-5.
