•By Telegraph — Copyright).

(Rec. 7 p.m.) New York, July 16 At the Palmer Stadium, Princeton, New Jersey, all records for the mile were shattered by John Lovelock, the Oxford University Blne, and product of Otago University, New Zealand, who reeled off the distance in the epoeh-making time of 4mins 7.6 secs, scori'ng a decided triumph over Bill Bourthron, the Princeton star. The record was put up in the feature race of a crack meeting hetween the forces of Oxford and Cambridge and Princeton and Cornell Universities. A fast pace was set all the way, Lovelock following Bourthron stride for stride. On the home stretch, he stepped out and won by seven yards despite Bourthron's gallant attempt to sustain the last lap burst. The New Zealander has wiped out the world's record of 4min 9 l-5sec made by Jules Ladoumergue at Paris in 1931. Bourthron's time was 4min 8.7 secs, also bettering the world's record in one of the most remarkablo mile events every run. The race surpassed even the sensational expectations which it had aroused and places Lovelock in a class by himself among the world's great milers. The time was more than two se.conds better than any mile previously run in the United States. Stopwatches showed that Lovelock raced the last 440 yards in 58.9 seconds. John Thornton (Cambridge) defeated his team-mate Charles Standwood (Oxford) in the record time of 14.8 seconds for the 120 yards hurdles.
