FOUR MEN REFUSE TO PLEAD IN COURT REMANDED IN CUSTODY

Wellington, Friday. Four men who had been taking a prominent part in the relief workers' strike were arrested in their homes last night, and were charged before Mr. Page, S.M., to-day, with unlawfuliy besetting a place where relief workers were engaged, with a view to compelling them to abstain from doing acts which they had a legal right to do. Accused refused to enter pleas-. They were Charles Norris Brooks (37), Richard Henry Webb (28), Charles Frederick Barker (49), and John Harvey Blair (37). Blair said he tho.ught it farcica.1 to plead, and Webb stated that he refused to recognise the court. The police, in asking for a remand, said acpused wefe at 'the head of a group. of about 3.5Q. men, which visited the relief jobs, endeavouring to get the men to leave their work. In order to avoid trouble men had been taken off- their jobs when the group was seen appearing. Substantial bail was suggested, b.ut counsel for accused intimated that bail was not asked for and the remand was not opposed. The men were remanded till Tuesday.
