Rec. July 7, 5.5 p.m. London, July 6. The Lancet records an import^nt discovery hy Drs. T. Laidlaw, Wil'don 1 Smith and C. Matthews tha.t' ferrets are suscejrtible to the nas'Al diseharge from ihdtiehza yictims. . Tjie \ippossibility of infecting animais has hitherto greatly hindered research work to comhat the disease. The doctors finally estahlished that influenza was cansed hy a filter passing virus. It is hoped that further study of the disease in ferrets will lead to the discovery of a preventrve suhstance which can he nsed against influenza in human heings. It has also heen discovered that the ferrets which recoyered from the infection were thereafter immune. It has been estahlished that the serum of human convalescents neutr^lises the virus of the disease. The medical correspondent of the Daily Telegraph suggests that mankind will never again find itself the helpless victim of an influenza epidemic.
