Malicious Action iDuring the week it was diseovered that an intruder, or intruders, had broken into the Dixieland Ballroom by prising open the doors with a sharp instrument and that a valuable druni had heen maliciously damaged. Digger's Night The CRiotorua Branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association has arrangements well in hand for the h'olding of a social evening at the Druid's Hall on Friday evening next, July 14. Featured on the programme is a novel competition for telling war stories. The diggers who are "on the mat" for this competition will receive charge sheets next week. Other items in the evenings programme include Digger Gordon's yerses written to a popular tune in which he "puts over" on individual members of the executive a hombardment of "H.E.'s" a Maori quartet, cards, games the president's remarks connected with the recent annual conference and words of farewell to Mr. S. L. Paterson. Rare Fish Gaught. There is a specimen of a very rare New Zealand fish to be seen at the office of Mr.'A. Kean, Conseryator of Fish and Game, at present. This is the New Zealand mudfish and it is peculiar in that it can and does exist quite aWay from water. It is somewhat similar to, an eel in some of its nioyements but is unlike an eel at the head. There are yery few instances known of this fish being found in New Zealand. This present specimen, which is about 6 ipches long, was caught in a dry mud drain near Morrinsville and 8ent alive to Mr. Kean for identification. It is a most interesting specimen. More Men Goldmining. Mr. J. S. Jessep- chairman of the Unemployment Board informed a "Morning Post" representative on Wednesday that the board had almost doubjed the number of men which it had ptit on in goldmining in the last seven months. In December, 1932, there were about 2000 men engaged in subsidised mining under the board and at the end of June there were 3600 men so engaged. It was probable that due to the Cromwell discoverieg, more applicatiops would be dealt With. Moving Picture Taken of Fire. An American who is staying at the Grand Hotel will have one more than usually interesting souvenir of his visit to Rotorua for he was foi'tiinate to he able to take a moving picture of the fire on Thursday night. Trout Ova Arrive at Hatchery. The first consignment of trout ova, numbering 200,000, has arrived at the Ngongotaha Hatchery during the week fom Tokaanu. The stripping is proceeding somewhat slowly owing to the fact that after an early commencement of the run, the fish slowed up and a spell pf wet weather with risings in the rivers is needed before the proper run will reach its height. A Kew Baiik. Tenders have heen let for the erection of a new National Bank building in Hastings to replace the one destroyed in the 1931 earthquake.
