CAUGHT IN WELLINGTON WITH GELIGNITE IN POSSESSION MANY CONVICTIONS

Wellington, Monday. Leslie Clifford Arthur Payne pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to • two charges of theft and a charge of i heing unlawfully in possession of ex- ! plosives. j The police stated that accused bookI ed a room at a hoarding-house on ! June 16, hut instead of occupying the room, he stole a suit of clothes from ! a boarder's room and then went to the | Salvation Army rest home, where he stole a blanket. When he was arrested some gelignite and detonators were found in his possession. He said- he got them in Auckland to blow open a safe. • * - Detective-Sergeant Revell said the man had a terrible list of convictioris, dating from 1915, and the police were investigating a number of offences h'e was alleged to have committed in other parts of the North Island. Mr. Page, S.M., sentenced accused to a total of six months' imprisonment. •
