LADIES' HOCKEY
SATURDAY'S RESULTS SHAMROCKS AND ARAWA THE SUCCESSFUL TEAMS EVEN CONTESTS The first round of the Rotorua Ladies' Hockey Association's Wairua-a-Rangi Cup competition was carried a further stage on Saturday whep two games were played on the Government Grounds. Although not quite as fast as on the previous Saturday the games were evenly contested and interesting throughout. The following were the results of the matches: Shamrocks 3, beat Taniwha 1. Arawa 1, beat Mourea nil. In the match between Shamrocks and Taniwha, the last named team made strenuous efforts to upset the competition leaders and'on many occasions held Shamrocks to defensive play in their own territory. It was the combination of the latter team, however, which enabled success to be achieved and eventually Shamrocks ran out the winners by three- goals to the one scored by Taniwha. For the winners Mattie Mitchell scored two goals, including a finely executed shot with a reverse stick, and N. Worrall one goal. The referee was Mr. A. C. Watts. Fielding a short team Arawa had to fight hard against the young Mourea side and on many occasions it was only the shortness in the backs and the offside rule which saved their goal. On their own part the Arawa forwards missed many opportunities by failing to follow up and tackle the opposing backs. Throughout both spells each team had an even share of the game and on many occasions both teams' goals were endangered. It was not until toward the close of the second half that a goal was scored, a rush by the Arawa forwards enabling a high shot to be placed in the top of the ne.t, giving the Mourea goalie no chance. Mourea could not equalise the score and the game closed in favour of Arawa. Mr. C. J. Casey refereed the game.
