ASSAULT ON 0|-P MAN TWO MOTORISTS BATTER HELPLESS OLD STOREKEEPjEiR DEMAND FOR MONEY

Wellington, Saturday. A dastardly assault was committed on a well-known storekeeper at Himatangi, s'ix miles north of Foxton, early this morningMr. and Mrs. M. Sorensen were aroused at 1.30 hy two men knocking at the door of th'e store and asking for benzine. Mr. Sorenson got up and supplied the benzine and oil, and was asked to hold a light while they were being placed in . the car. As he was doing so he was struck on tlie head hy one man who attempted to gag him. He struggled free with blood streaming down his face. His wife hearing the struggle investigated and endeaVoured to communieate with the police-, hut fouiid the telephone receiver wrenched from the machine. She then rushed intd the shop, where she was confronted hy the men and told to hand over the- money. She opened the till to show ' there was nothing there, and the men then threatened her, Finally they 'demanded cigarette's and were told to help th'emselves. , As they were doing so Mrs. Sorenson escaped and aroused the neighbours, but on their arrival the men had decamped. The police- have the number of the car used. Mr. Sorensen was 83 years of age.
