While a family party was m piogress at Whakatane last Wednesday a thief entered the front bedroom and stole £2 from a small box and 8s 6d from the pocke-ts of a pair of trousers. A slight noise was heard and the head of the house went to investigate. The front door was open and the thief gone. Policeman's Death The death is reported of Constahle William James Gonnor, of Matamata, at the age of 51 years. _ Mr. Connor joined the Police Force in 1913, and served first at Hastings. He was the-n transferred to Frankton Junction where he remained two years, before going to Matamata five years ago. The cause of death was a severe attack of pneumonia.
A Big Fish Whakatane fishermen last week landed a hapuka which turned the scales at 891b. Drunk on Station A first offending inebriate who was arrested on the Rotorua station on Friday afternoon was convicted and discharged providing he got out of town at once by Messrs. R. Griffiths and H. Tai Mitchell, J.'sP. on Saturday morning. Record Dairy Output The Tatua Dairy Company claims a record output this season, which closed on May 31. Although there is the same number of suppliers as last season, the favourable weather conditions and herd testing have improved the returns, and 200 tons more cheese has been manufactured in consequence. The company expects to pay ild honus over the whole season, which compares f avourably with other factories in the district. New Theatre It is reported that all arrangements have been made for the erection of a new theatre in Hamilton. The work will be put in hand by Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd., and the building will he on luxurious lines. Dead Comrade's Funeral Several members of the Rotorua j police yesterday attended the funerj al at Cambridge of the late Constable j Connor, of Matamata, who died on j Friday.
Inspection of Land While on his way from Taupo to Rotorua the Hon. J. A. Young toolc the opportunity of inspecting the land which Mr. E. Earle Vaile, of Broadlands, has donated to the Government for close-r settlement and infonned a "Morning Post" representative that he thought it would be eminently suitable for the purpose. Deputation to Minister A deputation from the Rotorua Rod and Gun Club, headed by Mr. J. Lee, waited upon the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Internal Affairs, while he was in Rotorua in connection with fish and game matters. Postal Rifle Miatch This evening, commencing at 7 p.m., the Rotorua Miniature Rifle Club will fire a postal match against the Whangarei Club. In previous matches Whangarei have been suecessful but with an improved standard this season Rotorua hope to gain their initial success. Births, Deaths and Marriages During the quarter ended June 30 returns compiled at the Rotorua Magistrate's Court showed that three marriages had been performed be-, fore the registrar, 24 notices of rnarriage issued and 14 deaths and 45 births registered. Court Statistics Statistics of criminal and civil cases decided at the Rotorua Magistrate's Court during the quarter ended June 30 were as followsj— Criminal cases heard 107, plaints issued 77 (value £1277 16s lld, amount recovered £1139 17s 5d) ; fines paid, £226 .7s 3d; court fees and costs paid £25 2s.
