MAORI CEREMONY
NEW MEETING HOUSE IS OPENED AT MATATA. Rain unfortunately marred proceedings on Sunday last at Matata when three ceremonies in connection with the opening of a large meeting house, the reopeninig of the Matata Roinan Catholic M'aori Church, and the reeent re-ereotion of the memorial gates outside th'e Maori school, were observed. The aneeting house has heen erected for the Ngati Rangitihi tribe, and natives from Taupo, Rotorua, Maketu, Te Puke, Whakatane and Te Teko assembled for the-occasion. The actual opening ©eremony was conducted by the: well-known Rotorua chief, Mita .Tafipopoki. There were approximately 400 visitors, and.as .the dining hall co'old not aceommodate this nuanher, niany jJartoek of food en th'e ground "hef ore the meeting house. However, "a shower of rain at this stage spoilt the enjoyment of many visitors. After the conclusion of the ceremonial opening of the meeting house, the iassemhly moved to the Roman "Cathqlic Church, which was reopened after a period of renovation. Father Van Beek assisted hy a visAtinigi priest •from Tauranga conducted the ceremony., The thipd event concerned the transference, of -the memorial pillars from the lagoon front, atid their ereotion iby the native schQO,l.; . , .Suiiday ■evening, [was d'evoted to h'aka's and--speechifying. .
