STRIKE STOPS A PLAY
AUDIENCE'S MONED REFUNDED. After an audience had assembled in a West End theatre ond evening recently, the leading memher of the company appeared before the curtain and said that there would he no- play. The plagoerg all had their money refunded. The play was "Beggar's Bowl," the drama dealing with th'e life of Wagner by Mr. Hugh Harleyn, which was produced lat the Duke of York's Theatre. Its* withdrawal was due to the British Actors' Equity Assocaation, which 'had been informed that full salaries could not he paid for the week's work. The manager of the theatre said that the arti'stg were2:uana,nteed approximately two-third's of their salaries, and the secretary of th'e British Equity stated that if the artists had agreed to accept less than the contract salaries they would lave been parties to breaking- the contracts and would have 'had no legal ;igihts.
