HUNTING

SATURDAY'S OUTING GOOD SPORT ENJOYED IOYER NGONGOTAHA COUNTRY SPLENDID WEATHER PREVAILS The sunshine and bracing air of Saturday, coupled with the fact of Ngongotaha being a popular hunting area, was responsible for a large number of followers attending, when the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Club met at the Ngongotaha Post Office at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The horses without exception looked well, and it is remarkable where the good class of horses which followed on Saturday come from in these days when good horses are scarce. A few race horses also turned out to qualify for the club's race meeting at the end of July. The field moved off through Mr. R. Martin's paddock near the sale yards a,nd hounds were cast off. Within a few minutes they found, and were away and through Mr. Brake's farm. Horses were fresh but some of the hills soon steadied them up and a good chase resulted. The hare circled round into Mr. G. Martin's, then back into Mr. R. Martin's where a check gave puss a breather. Hounds soon picked up the scent again and took the field at a good piace through Mr. Brake's, into and across Mr. Powell's and lost at a plantation of pines- where puss took shelter in the heavy undergrowth. Hounds were then moved on to the far side of Powell's without success, so a sheltered siding on Mr. J. E. Martin's was next tried. Here the hounds gave tongue and followed up a scent which led down to Mr. Managh's where it doubled back along the river bank, and after crossing the stream twice, the hare, which was now sighted, again made for the cover on Mr. Martin's farm. It was routed out after checking the hounds for a few minutes, and the chase next led back to Mr. Managh's propery. Here the quarry made for the open ground on the hill and a cool breeze, which had now risen, destroyed all scent. As by now both riders a.nd horses had had a good day, the hunt was called off and the followers! were invited to the residence where they were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Managh at afternoon tea. Among the followers were: Miss Harker (England), on Black Watch; Mrs. Bateman (Morrinsville), on Prince; Mrs. Stanier (whip), on Springbok: Miss J. Bertram, on Diane;
