ROTORUA TRAMPERS
WEEK-1END ATTEMPT TO CONQUER BIG MT. HAPARANGI On Sunday last, members of the Rotorua Tramping Club set out with the object of climbihg Mt. Haparangi, situated about eight miles on the Atiamuri Road. The party travelled by cycle to the foot of the mountain, but were disappointed on arrival to find Haparangi covered with a thick white mist, and giving out a distinctly "Not at Home" air to visitors. An hour's wait was of no avail, the mountain still hiding behind its veil, and so the climib had to be postpoped for another occasion. Although by this time, rain had commenced to fall, no one wanted to return home, so a.visit was paid to the Waipupumahana Bath about two miles further along the road: This fine round warm pool duly admired, cycles were turned homewards, a detour being made hy the new road through the bush on* the left. Cycling on this road was quite •an adventure, the surface being very wet, muddy and slippery; and the cyclists never knowing whose turn it would be to skid, ;going down the- hills. The woodcraft experts managed successfully to light a fire in the bush wh'ere everything was wet, and the resulting cups of tea were greatly enjoyed. The party. arrived home slightly damp, but firmly convinced they had spent the day better than those people sitting comfortably at home beside their fires.
