COASTAL SCENERY

" A valuable • national acset/' Was the comment of Mr: R. E. Champta- . loup, touring m'anager*of the Automobile Assoeiation, who returned to Opotiki last night after spending two days on the coast betwe'eji 'Opotiki" i ahd Cape Runaway in cbmpahy with Mr. C. Pipe, A.A.A. ag.ent at Opotiki. ■ Mi*. Champtaloup Considered the . coastal scenery was the finest of its, sort in the Dominion and although , there were mahy other very p'retty lengths of sea line, there was nothing of which he was aware, that was' so extensive or comprehensive. The native owners, said the touring man- ■ ager, seemed to appreciate the value ,of outside motorists visiting their district and Were co-operating in a very publie-spirited manner in setting aside areas suitable for camping purposes. The roads generally were found to be in excellent order and the Raukokore Bridge was comp'leted. Beyond Waihou Bay general traffic ,could not be advised according to the 1 A. A. officials as the roads were of iclay formation and very rough. Work :was being continued and shortly the metal would extend to the county .boundary. Beyond there to Cape RunaWay and onwards to the Mata-, kaoa terminus new formation was required. This said Mr. Champtaloup, was to be commenced in the near future and the A.A. would then suggest further metalling and the gradual completion of an all-weather route to Gisborne as funds permitted.
