HIGH TRIBUTE TO STANDARD PAID BY LORD BLEDISLOE

Auckland, Thursday Complimentary reference to the high standard maintained by the press of New Zealand was made by the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Bledisloe, at the opening of the. Overseas League new club rooms. His Excellency said that he had learned from the late Lord Northcliffe that the press was the benefieial organ of public opinion. "It gives me the opportunity of saying," he added, "that you are very fortunate in this Dominion having, almost without exception, a press of outstanding integrity, honesty and literary capacity, with which I doubt the press of any part of the world can bear compal'ison. • "Almost every distinguished visitor to these shores, comments on the very high standard which the press of this country maintains. "May I venture to hope that you will do all in your power to encourage maintaining that standard, bearing in mind the immense power the press wields in moulding public opinion." a
