The profit from the band contest held at Hamilton on Easter Saturday and Monday last was reported to a meeting of the S. A. Brass Bands Union held on Tuesday evening as being £40. Two-thirds of this amount is to be distributed to the competing bands on a pro rata basis, according to the distance travelled to the contest. Purchasing Committee At last evening's meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council, the council decided to set up a Purchasing Committee to authorise any expediture i'ncurred by offieers of the council. The Mayor and Crs. O. H. Coleman and F. •Goodson were appointed. Truck Capsizes A heavy motor truck laden with posts was badly damaged on Monday when it capsized at the 32 mile peg on the Taupo Road but fortun'ately the driver was unhurt. It is helieved that when the driver was endeavouring to steady a petrol can on the side of the truck it swerved across th'e road and overturned down a bank. The cab and chassis of the truck were severely damaged. Band Contest Allocation. At a meeting of the South Auckland Brass Bands Union held at Hamilton on Tuesday evening, it was decided that the location of the next contest to he held on Easter Saturday and Monday next year, is to he decided hy postal ballot among affiliated bands. The selection will be announced at the annual meeting fixed for July 18, when the adjudicator will also be appointed. A. and P. Building In connection with the General Committee's, report upon the lack of adequate ventila.tion, in the new A. and P. building suhmitted at last evening's meeting of the Rotorua Borough ■Council, some discussion arose. Crs. Johnson and Goodson contended fhat , the borough building inspector was at fault in passing the plans and Cr. Steele said that owing to the unexpected crowd, the atmosphere had been muggy and the association had been unahle to get the window fasteners it wanted. The ventilation had now been attended to. Increasing Unemployment "I think the time has arrived when the building regulations should he re. laxed," said Cr, Goodson at last night's meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council. "As it is we are assisting an increasing unemployment by sticking to the regulations strictly. No man will do' little jobs about his house if he has to get permits, etc., to do & couple of pounds worth of work." This view was supported by Crs. Banks and Johnson. The Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) •said that far from harrassing people, the administration of the by-laws had been elastic but the council must have some control or perhaps erections would go up that would depreciate adjoining properties. The council was not dn any way desirous of holding up work hut if they had to prosecute for breach'es of the regulations, they would do so without fear or favour.
