POTATO SHIPMENT
ONE THOUSAND TONS PORI SOUTH AMERICA. Early next month a shipment of 1000 tons of Canterbury potaotes will be made from Lyttedton and Timaru .to Montevideo, capital of Uruguay, South America. It is hop-ed to' make further- shipments during the year. It is not unusual for Canterbury potatoes to be shipped to South America, but the present is th'e first order that has been received for six or seven years. Efforts were made at that time to develop a regular trade, but they failed. Apparently Uruguay has a periodh cal -failure in its potato crop, and casts about, the world for markets. Canterbury this year evidently was the cheapest hiarket, and th'e order was plaeed here. The buyers usually want hig quantities in a hurry when they do order. . The price at which' the pdtatoes have heen sold is not available, but .Canterbury growers will he pleased to rid themselves of hig quantities of surplus produce.
