election system CHRISTCHURCH COMMlTTEE RECOMMENDS PIUMBER OF CHANGES SCRUTINY OF POLLS

Christchurch, Monday Following protests or inquiries ■ made by the Christchurch Citizens' Association suggesting that three members of the newly elected city council were irregularly enrolled as city members, the committee of the council made an investigation of the ' case, and a report was before the , coupcil meeting to-night. ■ The report declared that J. K. Archer was regularly enrolled and did not discuss the other councilloijs. The committee recommended that ■certain alterations be made in the law governing local elections: (1) 'That all supplementary rolls should he open for inspection immediately after the closing date, and that three days be allowed after closing of the I'olls for ohjection, such objections'to be hOard and determined by the magistrate ; (2) That it should he made co'mpulsory for every candidate for election to make a formal declaration nnder the Justices of Peace Act that he or she, \Yas qualified and that the candidate is on the rolls and correctly described thereon; (3) That riominations be advertised and that three days he allowed after closing of nominations for objections to be lodged against any such nominations, such objections to be heard and determined by a magistrate. The report was adopted.
