THE GREAT WEST ROAD
H.E.G.
Sir, — May I add my support to what Mr. Sloane said concerning tlie above road in yesterday's "Post." The council has systematically opposed. the construction for many years past even though the Public Works Department has more than onco offered to carry out the work free of cost or with the aid of a small subsidy. The greater part of the 6000 acres affected by the first few miles formed has long been held by Europeans and is rated on the same basis as land with first-class road access. The council has therefore been collecting a large revenue from this area, to say nothing of the many thousands of acres further back and has not spent a penny on roading. Surely a county council's first duty is to provide ratepayers with access to their properties and with that object in view they are permitted to
l§vy rates. — I am, etc. Rotorua, June 15.
