Generally regarded as providing a useful line on the forthcoming Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting at Trentham, the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting is held to-day and Saturday. Fields are good on the whole and racing should be interesting. The Maiden Plate opens the ball with a field of 19, several of whom have recent form which entitles them to respect. Hunting Star is not a bad sort and Mercian King has a couple of minor places to his credit recently. Bradman has been in the money on this course as have Sir Nigel and Sunstead while most of the others are unknown quantities. It is an open race with possible preferences for — Mercian King Bradman Hunting Star There are only five left in the Whakatu Hurdles and Kinsel, who f ell twice at Ellerslie, heads the list. The smaller hurdles here may help him to get round. Kimbo who has wins to his credit over the Gisborne country last year is nicely treated with 9.3 and Mia Stella who formerly hailed from the Cambridge district and showed a bit'of promise last year at Te Rapa and Ellerslie is not badly treated with a pound less. Miss Hastings is not long at the the game, but is fast if she can jump soundly while Million won at Gisborne. The probabilities are Kinsel Mia Stella High Falutin has a thumping weight in the Corinthian Plate, having 13.2 to carry, but it must be noted that it is a 10.7 minimum. It is a big question to ask him, but his party ' must think a bit of him to have accepted. Gold Ruler who has been placed in highweights earlier in the season has a fair burden with 11.10, but Luna Lux who has been hailed as a coming Wellington steeples possibility will be watched with interest and on her running here will depend much of her popularity in future events.
