BOROUGH COUNCIL

Our Own Correspondent) .

UNEMPLOYMENT SUBSIDY MAY POSSIBLY BE RECONSIDERED

' (From

The regular meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council was held on Monday night the Mayor, Mr. W. Sullivan, presiding. . Commenting on a letter from the Unemployment Board advising that no further monetary assistance could be given at the present time, the mayor advised that he had received a telegram from Hon. C. E. Macmillan, since the letter had been sent advising that the ihatter had been given speeial consideration and he understood that an increase-might be possible after June 20. Cr. Shapley pointed out that the method of allocation ' in towns was different to that of country districts and for that reason they were not comparable. Cr. Moncur spoke at length on the same matter. The mayor expressed the hope that as.many epuncillors and members of the staff as possible would attend divine service at Knox Church on Sunday, June 17 at 7 p.m. "as invited by the Ree. H. J. Lilburn. The Women's Institute was granted the use of the council chambers for the ensuing year. The Citizens' Band was granted permission to play in the Strand on the evening of June 2. Digest of Meetings Cr. Shapley asked if the* town clerk could let councillors have a digest of the business coming before the general meeting a few days beforehand in order to give councillors time to consider the matters which would be discussed. The town clerk explained the diffi®ulties in the way of such a method at the same time stating that he was quite prepared to do whatever the council desired. The mayor suggested that a similar digest to that placed before the present meeting might be delivered to councillors' places of ■ business at midday on the Monday of the meeting. Cr. Shapley agreed. The mayor reported that he had promised the superintendent of the Fire Brigade that he would suggest the appointment of a fire brigade committee to take an interest in the brigade. It was deeided on that a committee of the mayor, Crs. Coulter and Shapley be appointed as a committee. Electrical Engineer's Report On the motion of the mayor, it was deeided to have one all night light on the monument be.fore using other lights. Cr Coulter said that he thought the one light would be sufficient asa trial, but he trusted that later the whole town would be lit up. Cr. Canning suggested that community lighting be extended on Saturday nights until after the pictures come out. The engineer pointed out that such a change, if carried out, would have to be extended every night or else the clocks would have to be altered which would probably be detrimental to the machinery. The matter of parking of cars in James Street was referred to the Works Committee on the motion of the mayor. Mr. W. Penny was appointed assistant trafiic inspector. Cr. Coulter asked if the council could cut off the services of water and electric light where rates were not paid. His Worship said that it was not lawful to do this if the tenants were prepared to pay the charges. A test case on this matter had reeently gone against the. council.
