DISCUSSION REGARDING STANDARD OF MEALS

At the regular meeting of the Opotiki Hospital Board on Monday afternoon, there were present Messrs. F. Short (chairman), G. Powell, C. Black, H. M. Budd (medical superintendent), J. McDonnell, G. Moody, S, Shalfoon, J. T. Merry (clerk). The Opotiki Rugby Union wrote advising that the union has no funds for paying the hospital accounts of injured footballers. A letter was received from the Cook Hospital Board acknowledging receipt of the board's letter in connection with the treatment of patients without the Opotiki Board's consent. The Cook Hospital Board agreed to have instructions issued accordingly. The matron's report was read and it was decided to interview the Sunshine League in connection with the purchase of certain requirements for the hospital. The medical superintendent reported that 34 patiants had been admitted, 28 discharged and 15 were still remaining. A list of requirements was passed for purchase. Mr. S. Shalfoon mentioned the sub« ject of food in the hospitak He knew of one patient who had paid 12s per day and had only received porridge and bread for breakfast. The medical superintendent said this man might have been put on a light diet. The board thought that any complaints should be. forwarded in writing. The medical superintendent thoughl that two members of the board should visit the hospital at meal times and obtain information. Mr. Shalfoon, however, said he was satisfied with the medical superintendent's opinion' Mr. McDonnell and Mr. Moody were appointed two members to visit the hospital. Accounts amounting to £419 3s 7d were passed for payment.
