TOURNEY reviewed ABSENCE OF players AFFECTING some teams _____ Sk JOTTINGS ON THE WEEK
(Notes by
The seven-a-side tourney held last Saturday proved very successful, and -the addition of an extra two entries indicat'es that the game .is gradually inereasing in. popularity. The tournament took the form of a knockout competition, each game being of 20 minutes' duration without a spell. The low scoring indicates that the opposing side's were evenly opposed and that the defence was able to withstand strong attacks. In the first games, Ngongotaha and Aotea defaulted to Tui and Waratah respectively. The Kowhai v. High School B game was very evenly contested, but had Kowhai managed to field a full team, the result may have been different. The game ended in a win for High School B by 3 goals to 2. Huia gave their best exhibition of baslcetball sinee the commencement of the. season and although defeated by High School Old Students B, they gave a very ereditable performance. Old Students played a good game and deserved their win. High Scliool Old Students B 6, Huia '3. An Exciting Game The High School Old Students B v. High School A proved to be the hardest and most exciting game in the first round. It was very fast and even, strenuous efforts by both teams being kept up right to the final whistle, the score then being three goals each, which meant that the game liad to be continued until one team registered another goal. After five minutes of solid play the good fortune befeil Old Students, when V. Robertson shot a brilliant goal from 12 feet o'ut. The game ended High School Old Students A 4, High School 3. In the seeond round, Tui wero scheduled to meet High School B, and although Tuis played well they were just defeated by High School. Score, 7—5. Waratah proved they were on their game by defeating Old Students B by 7 goals to 4. The three following taems were left in the semi-finals: — High School B, Waratah and High School Old Students A. The luck of the draw left High School B and High School Old Students A to play off to meet Waratah in the final. This game was a good one. Old Students attackea strongly and scored first, this lead being maintained throughout the game. High School excelled themselves and at times had Old Students defending hard. They were unlucky in that severai good attempts at goal just failed. Both teams kept the ball moving, but Old Students were a shade quicker in passing. Both defence lines played well keeping the forwards in check. The game ended High School OIJ Students A 4, High School B, 1. With their short experienee High School B are to be congratulatea on getting so far in an open competition. Waratah v. H.S.O.S. A Great interest was shown in the final match. At the commencement of the game both teams handled the bal: with great accuracy, passing movements and team tactics being cleverly indulged in. Waratah scored first and it was not long before their opponents retaliated. As the game advanced Waratah's score slowly increased and although Old Student; fought hard they were unable to equal the score by the time the call came to change ends. Once again both teams settled down to hard solid play and although Old Students scored another two goals, they were unable to stem the swift, alert passir v of the Waratah team, who seemc : tireless in their play. Both teams handled the ball in " very sura manner and centres, fo •- wards and defenders were. faiily equally extended. The. final scc o was Waratah 5, High School C 1.1 School A 3. WEDNESDAY competition H.S.O.S. B v. HIGH SCHOOL E Old Students went on to the fk .d minus one player, but their game v. as very fast. The ball travelled up z d down the field continuously, the jfence of both teams, intercept: .g deftly and changing the. attack. the first spell the score showed t n all. In the second the score v, aiagain see-sawed, first one team sct.ring then the other, until just c.i call of time High School drew ahead and won by the narrow margin ci one goal. High School B 7, H.S.O.S.' B 0. High School A v. Tui A In the first game played at High School, Tui, although playing a good game, were defeated by High School A. Tui appeared to be gainii g experienee from the stronger teams and a vast improvement on last s tson's play was noticed. Tui's centiv. tried exceedingly hard to ke.ep h. .■ two forwards supplied with the ba 1, buc they were finding difficulty in avoicling the strong High School defenaer.:-.. The High School players were a. times responsible for some ve:q, speedy passing, but the forwards, ul though working well together, lacked accuracy in goal shooting. 1 H-gt. School were frequently penalised ijumping over the 12ft. line befoio the ball had crossed this line. The final score was High School A 15. Tui A 8. No games were played at the Government Grounds last Wednesday Tor in the first game, Aotea defaulted to H.S.O.S. A and in the second Tui B defaulted to Waratah. It is most unsatisfaetory, both, to officials and players, when teams do not turn up to play their games at thp app^inted time. The, play this season, both in the Saturday • and Wednesday competition, has been characterised by the fact that quite a number of teams are playing short sometimes one member missing from the combination, sometimes more. In certain cases the reason for the absence of a player has been justi- % . ; r , t
fiable, but lately it seems that teams are being left in the lurch for no reasonable excuse, more often as not just at the whim of the players. This is not a good spirit, either fiom the individual or the team point of view. Correction In last week's notes it was stated that Waratah and H.S.O.S. B went on equally one short each. Later Waratah lost a player through injury. Actually Waratah were one short to start with and their opponents fielded a full team. When the Waratah player retired hurt their opponents also dropped a player, but in f airness to Waratah it is obvious that they were still a player less and thus under a severe handieap. Fixtures The following are the games to be played at the Government Grounds on Saturday afternoon next: — No. 1 Ground. — H.S.O.S. B v. Huia 2 p.m. H.S.O.S. A v. Kowhai, 2.20 p.m. No. 2 Ground.-^— Waratah v. Ngongotaha, 2.20 p.m. OLD PUPILS TEAM The Old Pupils A basketball team ?for Saturday is; — Y. Robertson, J. Allen, N. Foggin, iE. Clarke, F. -Bates, N.
