ROTORUA VOLUNTEERS

OFFER OF CUP TO MACHINE GUNNERS BY COL. FRASER The offer of a eup for competition among the machine gun teams for long range shooting was made by Col. E. G. Fraser at a parade of the 13th and 14th platoons of the Machine Gun Company of the Vlth Hauraki Regiment, on Wednesday evening. Col. Fraser, who was formely chief instruetor of machine gunners at the Grantham Military School, England, during the war, gave a very interesting lecture to the troops on the subject of long-range firing and the mounting of guns under various conditions. He illustrated this by a number of sketches showing the ingenious gun emplacements used during the war to conceal the whereabouts of machine guns. At the conclusion of his address, Col. Fraser expressed his regret at the fact that a suitable. range for long-distanee firing was not available nearer to Rotorua than the artillery range on the Atiamuri Road and made the suggestion that SergeantMajor Bates should endeavour to locate one nearer in which case he would donate a cup for long-range firing. Prior to the address the platoons under Lieut. R. F. Haycock, practised mounting, loading, aiming and dismounting the guns. There was a good muster and the men took a very intelligent interest in their work, displaying great progress and keenness.
