THRILLING FINISH SEES MAKEUP WIN G.N. HURDLES BEACON FIRE'S CORNWALL
Ellerslie, Saturday. Heavy going was the condition in the first day of the Auckland Racing C'lub's Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie to-day 'and only one favourite came home, Neil winning the Green Lane Steeples in a field of five. The Great Northern Hurdles went to Mr. J. M. Corry's Makeup, who was second to his stable mate Landmark last year and the finish was a thrilling one, the winner having a neck the better of Royal Visitor and Emancipation who deadheated for second. The Cornwall provided a surprise, the Woodville horse Beacon Fire beating the Taranaki-trained hack, Carfex, with Seatown who has been five times placed in the race in five starts, third. Two and a half lengths; two; 1.31 4-5. Hawthorn Wins Easily The first division of the 'Jervois Handicap saw Hawthorn, Allegretto and Beau Irish begin best and they finished in that order. On the back stretch Hawthorn, Allegretto, Woodful, Great Britain, Beau Irish and Royal Gallant- were prominent and when they returned for home Hawthorn put in a claim to win by two an a-half lengths from Allegretto with Beau Irish, third, followed- by Royal Gallant, Great Britain, Imamint, Woodful, Supreme Ruler, Tatyoon and Caliente. Another For Bunchanan The scratching of Domo left a field of five in the Greenlane Steeples, Neil being installed favourite and he duly won from Carlaris with Ruby Meteor who chanced the last two fences, third. Rugy Meteor, Neil and Carl laris did th eearly leading from Kairuri and Standfast and that was the order over the double. Carlaris was given a breather and Ruby Meteor, Kairuri, Neil and Standfast led up the hill.
