RUGBY FOOTBALL

at arawa park OLD BOYS BEAT SCHOOL IN FAST, OPEN GAME A BRIGHT EXIIIBITION

In the absence of the Arawa Tribal team at New Plymouth, there were no senior Rugby games at Arawa Park on Saturday. Six junior matches were played, the chief attraction being the meeting of High School and Old Boys A. The standard of play in this game was well up to expeetations, and in a fast, open and spectacular match, the best seen at Arawa Park this season, Old Boys' won by nine points to six. This is the first time an Old Boys team has defeated a school siae. High School's play, particularly in the backs, has improved out of sight from their earlier displays. A fea-

ture of the game was their stubborn defence when pushed back near their line. Old Boys did not settle down properly till the second half. At halftime, the scores were level at 3 all, and the result was in doubt right till the final whistle. Soon 1 after the commencement, School were awarded three penalty kicks in succession, and Hinton managed to send the third of these between the posts. School 3, Old Boys nil. Old Boys were keeping play in school territory most of the time, but were not heeling the ball very often. Finally they got the leather back from a scrum in school's twenty-five. The ball went from Pipson to Christophers to L. Randerson, who made a determined run to go over wide out. The kick failed. High School 3, Old Boys 3. Halftime came without further score. The second spell saw Old Boys attacking again with occasional good passing rushes by the school back line. Both sides missed several shots at goal from penalties. Repeated attacks on the school line found their defence holding very well, but although they defended very stubbornly, Old Boys were not to be denied, and a strong passing rush saw Randerson go over for his second try. . Fipson failed to convert. Old Boys 6, School 3. From the halfway kick, the whites (Old Boys) went at it again, and soon afterwards Pipson scored in a good position from a scrum near the School line. Old Boys 9, School 3. School attacked strongly for the remaining few minutes of the game, and their efforts were rewarded when Simpson set his backs going with half the white backs out of position, Matthews scoring a good try near the sideline just on time. Hinton missed the kick at goal, and the linal whistle went with the scores: — Old Boys 9, High School 6. Dr. W. S. Wallis was referee.
