The assailant, after knocking Smith down and causing grave injuries to his head, rau swiftly along McLaggan Street before anyone realised what had occurred, and so far no trace of him has been found. It is believed that Smith, who is a married man with a family of two, wias sija.nding outside the Crown Hotel when a man came up to him, and after a few words had been exch'anged between the two, struck Smith heavily on the mouth. Smith fell on the road, the back of his head striking the surface with considerable force. A crowd quickly gathered and Constable Brazier arrived on the scene, but found the victim of the assault unconscious. Dr. Borrie was summoned, and on his arrival rendered first aid and the injured man was removed to the hospital in th'e ambulanee, bnt died almost as soon as he arrived at the institution. An examination, was made by Dr. Elder, who fonnd that there were injuries to the brain, which apparently had been caused by the fall on the road, and there was also a cut on the lip, which was ample vidence of th'e force of the blow which felled the victim.
