As a climax to abnormal activity ion Vesuvius since Fehruyary, the face of a icone, which reached its higbest level since 1928, split open to-day, accompanied by a slight earthquake. A stream of red hot lava, four feet wide, is pouring out at the rate of nine feet a rninute, but at present it is eonfined within the larger crater, but is threatening to overflow and reach the valley and the villages beneath. Three craters are emitting smoke and gases.
