SURPiRISE RESULT IN WEDNESDAT GAME .SEVEN-A-SIDE TJO'URNEY
(By
The Rotoroa Basketball Association's Saturday competition was carried a step further last Saturday when, dlaspii'be threateniing weather! conditions, a round of matches was played. Play was very interesting but there were no surprises. Waratah v. H.S.O.S. (B) Waratah attacked strongly from the commencement a.nd opened their score within the first few minutes of the game. Old Students, playing one short in the centre base, found difficulty in copeing with their speedy opponents, several times losing the pass off from centre, or failing to touch the ball before it crossed the line. Passing improved in the second spell but Waratah had the better of the play throughout the game. K. Kingon, ably supported by her two helpers, scored the majority of the goals for th'em. Old Students' goal forwards would improve if, when obtaining the ball from the centre base, they adopted the praetice of working towards their goal and not passing away from it, thus causing easy interceptions and ■a loss of opportunities at goal. Personal contact by play ers of both teams was very much .in evidence, while the 12ft line was the cause of a number of free passes being given. The scores were Waratah 16, H.S.O.S. (B) 4. ,Game Postponed The Kowhai-Ngongotaha game was postponed until -a later date. H.S.O.S. (A) v. Huia Huia, fielding one player short, werel defeated by Old Students (A). At times the losers showed spasms of
good play and demonstrated that with h'ard practice and concentration on combined tactics they could hold their own. Last Saturday, however, their good passing from defence to forward third too often went for nothing because their two forwards were unable to score. Old Students won by eleven goals, but their play was not up to usual standard. These play ers are far too apt to stand behind their opponents instead of coming out to receive the ball. When this difficulty is overcome and the forwards have gained a little more speed, they will be a strong team to cope with. The game ended H.S.O.S. (A) 14, Huia 3. Referee, Mrs E. G. Guy. i , Wednesday Competition Owing to the wet weather, conditions were very unpleasant for play on Wednesday last. Two games were postponed and though the teams had the option of a postponement for the Waratah v. Old Students (B) match they decided to brave the elements. The result was a very keen, even game with a surprise victory for Old Students. The score was 7 goals to 6 and the issue was in doubt right to the call of time. Both teams started one short but Waratah lost B. Vaughan through a slight .accident. Old Students also dropped a player to even matters up. This is the first defeat suffered by Waratah for a long time. They are a formidable combination and cred'it must be given to the winners for a game fight which brought a deserved victory. Referee, Mrs. I. Shearer. The other match played was H.S.O.S. (A) v. Tui. The experienced Old Students team had no difficulty in registering a comfortable win over their less practised opponents, the score being Old Students 18, Tui nil. .Referee, Mrs. I. Shearer.
