Six lives were lost in the capture of Hamid known as the "Terror of the United Provinees," and four of his gang, who had been wanted for some time in connection with banditry and murder. Hamid was in a village shop drinking with his assoeiates when he was recognised by a constable, who raised the alarm, collected a party of citizens, returned and surrounded the shop. Hamid and his followers broke the cordon in a desperate effort to reach refuge in the jungle, shooting three and wounding others. Three of the gang were beaten to death by the villagers who were incensed at the loss of three fellow villagers. Hamid and fonr others were captured and will be tried for murder, armed rohbery and torture.
