MANAGING RUGBY
ROTORUA SUB-UNION COMMITTEE DEALS WITH PLAYERS ORDERED OFF FINLAY CUP, FIXTURES Next Saturday's Rugby .occupied the attention of the management committee of the Rotorua Rugby Sub-_ Union last evening, Mr. T. S. Robertson presiding. Mr. L. H. Riggs brought up the matter of the re-classification of junior teams, the chairman mentioning that the position was now settled until the end of the first round. Players Ordered Off The referee, Mr. J. Docherty, of the Kaharoa-Rotoiti B game reported having ordered off H. Minie for bumping a player four seconds after he had cleared the ball. The Rotoiti man was hurt. Minie, who appeared had to be interrogated through an interpreter, and said' that when the ball was kicked he jumped in the air to stop the ball not to play the man. He and the other man collided. The referee said that the ball was away in the paddock and the Rotoiti man lay moaning on the ground for fully two minutes. This was denied by Minie, who said that he was following up his ball. ' The referee said that Minie had any amount of time to have avoided the Rotoiti player. Minie said that if he had tried to stop he would have hit the ground not the Rotoiti player. The union decided to suspend Minie for two playing Saturdays and an amendment that he be stood down for four being lost. Members deplored the prevalence of illegal tackling, such as that reported.
The referee in the Waiariki- Waikite match (Mr. R. G. Webb) detailed the incident's which led to Te Waerea being ordered off. It was for a second offence of obstruction. In the cases of Ross (Ross-Walker) and Rogers he saw them at grips and also blows being struck. In the case of Te Waerea, he had been previously warned and had to be ordered off. The- second offence was a glaring one and was so marked that he was close on awarding Waikite a penalty try. In the second case he did not see the start of the me-lee which occurred behind his back. Te Waerea stated that he did not remember having been penalised the first time for .obstruction, but admitted the second offence. Mr. L. Clarke, after some discussion, said that he thought the player had been sufficiently punished and on the motion of Mr. Anderson it was decided to adminster a caution to the offending player. Two Other Cases In the cases of Rogers and Walker, both denied striking any blow. Walker said that he grabbed Rogers, but he did not know if he had the ball. He did not see the- ball. Rogers said that he had the ball when tackled, but it rolled away. There was no blow struck. Walker said that he wanted to apologise to Rogers after they came off. The chairman said that he had heard a remarlc. Walker saying to Rogers: "What do you want to do that for?" Through an interpreter, Walker denied saying anything of the sort. Mr. Anderson said that when they left the field, the two men were quite friendly. The referee said that when he saw them there was no loYe lost between them. This had been mentioned also to him by Dr. Wallis who had seen the whole incident. Mr Anderson said that the evidence was purely circumstantial, but tended towards one man being the aggressor. Mr. Webb said that what he saw was not circumstantial. What he saw he considered sufficiently serious to warrant both men being put off. An amendment that the matter be de-ferred until next Monday and that Dr. Wallis be asked to attend was agreed to. Donations Received The secretary reported that donations of £1 ls each had been received from Colonel E. G. Fraser and Mr. A. Walden.
A Rolling Stone The case of a player who applied for registration for more than one /'club caused some discussion. Deleigates from three clubs said that he was applying for registration with them, but the representations of another club capped the lot by stating that the man was an unfinancial member of his club from last year. '"He's a bit of a rolling stone," said one. The club delegafe then withdrew his request for the registration of the player. 1 It was decided to finally register the player for his old club, his financial position being the club's business. - Visit to Waipa .The Waipa- Rugby Union wrote suggesting that July 1 would be a suitable date f or the Rotorua Rugby Union's team's visit to Te Awamutu. The chairman thought the date suitable. This was accepted if no Finlay or Feace Cup fixtures are staged for I this date. Finlay Cup Games It was stat'ed that in the Finlay Cup games Rotorua was to play Matamata at Matamata and Morrinsville at Morrinsville and Putaruru at Rotorua. The chairman said that he hoped the Waikato v. Bay of Plenty match would be played at Rotorua on July 8. The secretary said that he had definite information to that effect. Saturday's Draw . The draw for Saturday's games '(all junior) is as follows: — High School v. Old.Boys A, No. 1 ground, 2.50, Dr. Wallis. Kaharoa v. Awahou, No. 1 ground, j-L.30, • Mr. R. Young. Whaka v. Too Much Travelling Mr. Webb voiced a protest against the amount of travelling which the seniors were called upon to under'take this season which he thought was too much in comparison with the juniors. " It was pointed out that the juniors would have a chance at the Clarke Cup and also the Boyce Gup.
