WILL SURVIVE BUT NO GOOD PURPOSE SERVED

(Press. Assn.-

NOBODY IMPRESSED

— By Telegiaph — C'oprngnt).

(Rec. May 29.) Calcutta, May 28. On?y twelve houirs are left for Gandhi to complete his twenty-one days' fast, during which' he has lived entirely on mineral water. He was descniblad to-n-ight as "holding his own." There is every probability of his being able to enjoy goat's milk and orange juice at noon to-morrow. At the end of the fast nobody, least of all Gandhi, appears to know what it is all about-. Wb'ether it is an expert piece of political chicanery in order to embarrass the Government, whether the insane act of a megalomaniac or a superb altruistie gesture, it is a complete failure, as it has excited less interest among the masses than any previous act. The Indian political inteiligentsia regard the "old man" as a nuisance, while the man in the streets regards him with amused tolerance.
