BIRTHDAY PARTY
GIRL GUIDES, RANGERS AND BROWNIE COMPANIES The celebration of the Opotiki ' Guides', Rangers' and Brownies' second birthday toolc place in St. John's
' Hall on Friday evening. The- functioii took the form of a tea party which was followed by a very entertaining programme. The tables, which were set out in T-shaped formation, were ; ■ very attractive- with. the brightly colt oured flowers and decorations. The v three birthday cakes occupied the places of -honour on the resp.ective 'tables. - ' The Rangers' cake was made by i Mrs. W. Lee, the Guides' cake by Mrs R. Semple and iced by Mrs. W. Bur•rett, while Mrs. J. Baifd made the 'Brownies' cake, which Mr. Tyrie iced. Miniature brownies and guides v were made by Mrs. Semple. ; Th eparty opened with the singing '.of grace. Among the guests present were: Captain E. Westlake and Lieutenant E. Mitehell (Waimana Girl Guide Company), Lady Gub Master Joy j Kelly and A.C.M. E. Kirkbride ( Opotiki Wolf Cub Pack), Guides J. Bell and S. Woodfield (Waimana), Miss J. 1,'Salt and the committee, Mesdames F. Kibblewhite, J. Baird (acting presi- • dent), D. McDiarmid, C. G. Salt, J. /McCalden, R. Semple, G. Murray, G. /Russell and G. Allen (secretary). * The leaders of the. ' diff erent eompanies present were, Captain Martin and Lieut. N. Johnson (ranger com'.pany) , Captain Morell and Lieut. D. ,-McNee (guide company), Brown Owl ',E. Mnrray and Tawny Owl I. Wilson ; (brownie company). On behalf of the committee, Mrs. ' Baird welcomed all present to the party and stated that the committee were deeply interested in the welfare of the companies. She wished \them many happy returns of their ' birthday. Captain Morell, Captain Martin, / Captain Westlake, Brown Owl E. 'Murray, and C.M. Joy Kelly individj. ually thanked the committee for the f pleasant function and extended greetings to the rangers, guides and brownies. The candles were then lit and the 'cakes cut. Captain Martin moved that three hearty eheers be given the committee who gave cheers in response. 1 . A letter from Sister E. Harris, district commissioner, thanked the company for their invitation'to the party (and apologised for inability to be present. She also sent birthday greetings. ■ The remainder of the evening was . ppent in games and items. During a I brownie demonstration, Tawny Owl |/L Wilson presented Brown Owl E. !•, Murray, who is giving up her position as leader, with a dainty pewter trinket box on behalf of the Browni ies. Miss Murray suitably replied. j The Rangers contributed songs and •t recitations. I Two amusing playettes were acted, ! the first by the Poppy Patrol, the | parts being taken by Elfie Semple, Marjorie Cate, Louise Baird, Cecilia ! Murray, Ethel MeNee. The Lilly of the Valley Patrol staged "The School Teacher" in which Barbara Stuart, (Pat Ingram, Margare.t Anderson, Ngaire Borrie, Roberta Abbot and Irene Hennessey took part. Towards the close of the evening, three recruits from the . Guide. company were enrolled, ■ namely Marjorie 1 Cate, Hilda Gough, and Divina Connelly. Second stai* badges were presented to Louise Baird and Pat Inl gram. , The singing. of "Taps" concluded the evening.
