SHAMROCKS AND TANIWHA WIN SATURDAY'S MATCHES ARAWA START WELL The second round of the Robertson Cup series of ladies' hockey matehes •vvhich eommenced on Saturday prove d very interesting despite the overcast and cold eonditions and at times sorae good stickwork was witnessed. As a result of the matehes the positions on the ladder are unchanged, the winning teams being Shamrocks (the leaders) and Taniwha. The following were the results of the two games played: — Taniwha 1 goal, beat Mourea nil. Shamrocks 4 goals, beat Arawa 1. A Narrow Victory The early game, between Mourea and Taniwha was solidly fought throughout, although there was little play of an exeiting nature. In the first few minutes of the opening spell Mourea attacked strongly and forced Taniwha to a penalty corner. Taniwha, however, recovered and returned play to the Mourea half where strenuous play ensued for some time until Mourea again retaliated and for some time held their opponents in the red and black territory. Play of an even nature ensued until halftime when no score had been recorded, although each team had had many opportunities to open their account, but had lacked the necessary finish in the circle. In the second spell Taniwha played a better game and had an advantage in play. Good work by R. Ipu and the other Mourea backs, however, kept them at bay, although several scrambles in the circle were dangerous for Mourea. The latter team also had their share on attack and several times went near to scoring, but their forwards' circle work was also wealc and the Taniwha backs were sound. Taniwha eventually came back to the attack and a good movement saw Ratu place a good one past the Mourea goalie. Taniwha were now having the better of the game and held their opponents in their own territory until the close of the game when no f urther score had been registered. Mr. A. C. Watts refereed the game. Taniwha 1, Mourea nil. Leaders Unbeaten p

Meeting the championship winners, Arawa played a good game against ' Shamrocks in the first spell of the game when both teams were equal with one goal apiece. In the early stages Arawa continually worried the ' Shamrock backs, but laek of cohesion in the forward line lost the Arawa sido many chances. Obstruction on i the part of both teams was prevalent and offside play in the twenty-fives was also rife. Arawa were the first to score, following up a shot from a scramble in the Shamrock circle to place the ball into. Ihe net. Spurred on by this reverse Shamrocks swung to the atand l'f ;iowing a period of attack in Arawa territory successfully finishi'd the movement to draw level with their opponents. At half time Shamrocks were again on attack, but Ihe score was unchanged. Kven play for some time in the second -pc*l: saw the advantage fluctuatinr" irtwun both teams, Shamrocks however showing the better comhination between backs and forwards while E. Mitchell and T. Mitchell wero defending well for the |atter side. Exeiting play on the Shamrock line saw a good centre go to ihe Arawa line where R. Kingi c-onijilei od the movement by finding ihe net. Subsequent play was mainly in favour of Shamrocks and the Arawa backs fought strenuously to keep their goal intact from further assault. One of many good movements on the right wing by Wima saw the ball sent into the Arawa circle where R. Ratema accepted to place a good shot past the Arawa goalie and make Shamrocks again equal. After Arawa had several times been sent back for offside play a liielee on the. twenty-five saw M. - Mitchell emerge with the ball which she dribbled to the circle to complete a Mua solo effort by scoring. The, advantage was now being gained bj Shamrocks and another good rightwing movement gave M. Mitchell another chance which she accepted. Strenuous efforts by the Arawa side could not pierce the opposing -defence and the game ended with tho score unchanged. Mr. C. Casey was referee. Shamrocks 4, Arawa 2.
