FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND FOR MacDONALD CUP
UNPLEASANT CONDITIONS With a dnll threatening sky overhead on Saturday and a bleak wind, the prospects for the first qualifying round of the MacDonald Cup looked anything but promising. Forebodings were unjustified, however, for the rain held off and as the afternoon progressed the wind dropped, allowing the game to be finished in really good golfing weather. The f airways were very heavy and the run almost negligible. It was a day for the long hitters. The average cards were poor, the outstanding exception being that of M. Carr, whose 74 was a good performanee. The greens were slow and tricky after the rain and wind. The best gross cards were returned hy M. Carr, 74; K. Buddle, ,78; S. E. Carr, 80; Barker, 82; A. Anderson, 83 and Fenton, 84. Best nett: M. Carr, 4 handicap, 70; Hamilton, 16 — 70; G. McDowell, 22 — 71; J. A. Speer, 16—71; K. Bnddle, 6—72; G. H. French, 26—72; Worthington, 15 — 7§ ; O. Jones, 16— 73; E. Fenton, 11 — 73; Barker; • 9—73. • No. 8 green is eoming nicely into ,r play, and the hole is an attractive oue. The cleaning up of waste scrub 'on the margin of the roughs and af /the ninth hole has greatly speeded up the course. Hunting for lost balls — save in the lake is hecoming an infrequent occupation. ... During the week-end a number of Visiting golfers were attraeted to the links. • Among them were H. O. Gallaghan, one of the most constant sup, porters of the club's major fixtures; W. Waikley also of Hawera, A. Halej 'Wellington; P. L. Twomey, New Plymouth; S. Hudson, an English visitor, and others.
