MAN FOUND SITTING ON A BRIDGE GIRDER TIMELY INTERFEREN CE

Hamilton, Friday. The timely interference of a young man, Mr. A. Robinson, employed by the Self Help Stores, Dtd., prevented a tragedy on the Hamilton railway bridge this morning. Mr. Robinson was walking to work ahout 7.15 this morning when he no-' ' ticed a middle-aged man, apparently in straitened circu'mstances, sitting on one of the girders of the railway bridge on the far side of the railway lines. He was as far outj as h'e could get and with nothing to*save - him. A slip meant a fall of 80 odd , feet into the river below. Mr. Robinson coaxed the man to cross back on to the footbridge by teljing him he would feed him and look after him but when he attempted to escort him off the bridge the man broke away and attempted to cross the railway lines again. He was brought back, but during the journey to the other end of thee bridge 'h'e attempted to break away and make for the side of the bridge. After considerable difficulty Mr. Robinson helped by a passer-by reached Victoria Street and the man was handed over to the police. He had two largte bfricks in his coat pocket. The man concerned has been taken to a mental hospital.
