THE GOLD STANDARD

Speaking before the National Union of Manufacturers, at Birmingham, Mr. L. S. Amery, M.P., said no greater crime against Britain or the British Empire could be committed than any attempt to tie us again to the gold standard without the absolute assurance that . price levels would be maintained. The greajt industries would follow any lead of confidence given by the Government. If the Government showed it was absolutely confident in the material and moral resources of the British people, showed a readiness to embark upon any enterprise which was industrially justifiable, or encouraged enterprises which were to strengthen the commpnity without tpo much Ttegard to the immediate balancing of the Budget for this year, industry would follow suit. It would be a vital mistake on our part if, in order to get any reduction of the American debt, we either abandoned the independence of the sterling money system, which was working so well, or the essential foundation of it constituted by the tariff system and the Imperial preference system.
