NOTES AND JOTTINGS

REVIEW AND COMMENT ON WEDNESDAY'S GAMES. EXECUTIVE MEETING.

(By

A meeting of the committee was held last Monday evening, Mrs. E. G. Guy presiding. Those present includ\ed Misses B. Chambers, J. Greig, F. Bates,. D. Emeny, Y. Ford and I. Anderson. A verbal application was received from a delegate enquiring if Ohinemutu could affiliate as a sub-associ-ation, entering two teams for Sat\irday competition and one for The Wednesday competition. The application for the Saturday competition was refused and permission to enter one team for the Wednesday competition was granted. The secretary advised that the first suitable date on which to hold the association's dance would be June 28. It was decided to accept this date. Clubs were asked to appoint a delegate to the dance committee as soon as possible. At a previous meeting it was sug- ' gested that as there was not a sufficient number of teams in the association to grade the standard of play, the experienced teams should break-up their strong combinations and take an even number of new plaj^ers, thus coaching them and making the standard of the game more even. As the number of new players did not .warrant this it was resolved to allow teams playing in the S'at- ■ urday competition to enter the same team for the Wednesday competition without altering their combination. It was suggested that new teams

affiliating in future, should be requested to show more distinction in uniform than the gym frocks worn by the majority of players. Wednesday Competition. Players competing in the matches played on the High S'chool ground last Wednesday found difficulty in playing on a grass court. Grass coufts are dangerous, especially if there has previously been rain and the courts are damp and slippery. To gain speed and accuracy, baslcetball should be played on a hard firm surface, asphalt being preferable Waratah v. High School B. In this game Waratah gained an easy victory over the "B" team, dcfeating them by 25 goals to 2. The latter team will, no doubt, improve with constant practice against their strong "A" team. High School (A) v. H.S.O.S. (A.) The "A" team defeated Old Students by 7 goals, the final score • being 15-8. The game, however, was more closely contested than the score 'indicates. Old Students fielded one player short and in the goal base played two forwards only who found difficulty in evading their opponent's quick solid def ence. High S'chool played well taking advantage of every opportunity of adding to their score and the half-time whistle found them well in the lead. When play recommenced, Old Students played with greater vim and the addition of F. Bates in the forward third enabled them to sustain the attack thus making the play in this half more even. They were, however, unable to over- .• take High School's lead and a good game ended in favour of High School. Miss Street refereed the above games. Tui (A) v. Aotea. Aotea, the new 'Ohinemutu team played its initial game against Tui and were beaten by one goal only. Aotea had a good defence and centre third, but their forward third lacked cohesion with the result that their passing suffered by interception, thus missing opportunities of scoring. As they are a new team it would be to their advantage if they studied the rule book more closely for it seems a pity that such a good combination should be penalised through carelessness. M. Pompey was Aotea's strongest defender and one several occasions prevented her opponents from scoring. Tui are to be congratulated ! upon their win. They played a hard i'fast game and their diligent practice was rewarded them by producing an excellent team combination. I. Anderson and V. Butler played an outstanding game for this team. The score was Tui (A) 7, Aotea 6. H.S.O.S. (B) v Tui (B) Tui "B" is a new team of players who are playing the game for the i first time. They gave a good indication of following in the footsteps of their "A" team on gaining a knowledge of the game very quickly. Old Students (B) gave a good display and won by 27 goals to nil. The symjjathy of all 'hasketball players and supporters will be extended to Miss Ethel Rushton owing fto the death in Auckland of her mother. As a mark of respect and sympathy the Kowhai team, of which Miss Rushton is a member, will not be asked to fulfil its fixture with Ngongotaha on Saturday, the game being postponed to a later date. Fixtures for Saturday. Waratah v. H.S.O.S. (B), 2 p.m. H.S.O.S. (A), v. Huia, 2.45 p.m. SATURDAY' S TEAMS High School Old Pupils' B Team: — Y. Ford, J. Tucker, M. Dowfing, D. Kingon, D. Hamilton, M. McKenzie, H. Harris'on, G. Jones, V. Fenton. Huia. — Haana Eru (capt.); Martha Anderson, Louisa Hatu, Pia Epapara, Moana Rikihana, Ru Ngatai, Addie Vercoe, Polly Ha.miora, Muri Pene.
