maintenance activity The following report outlined the work completed and in hand during the past year: — Hale's Access Road. — Off Oturoa Road, 37 chains formed. Atiamuri Road. — The deviation at the 18-Mile Peg has been surveyed, and when formed will considerably improve this road. spread on this road as a top course. Ford's Access Road. — Approximately 30 chains of this road has been L rmed. Mamaku Streets. — Rhyolite has b:.en carted and spread on various streets in Mamaku. Oturoa Road. — Pemberton's Bridge has .been replaced by a wooden culvcrt. Twenty-five chains of road has L.:en metalled with rhyolite. Basley's Road. — Thte bridge near .he junction of this road with the . -ain highway has been replaced by .x wooden culvert. Pakira Road. — Approximately 100 hains of this road has been formrd. Valley Road. — The lowering of the ;.ade on the hill near Morrison's has ■pened up a large quantity of metal suitable for a top course. This portion of the road is opened for oneway traffic in the meanwhile, until the metal is taken out. M. H. Maraeroa Road. — Metal from Henderson's quarry has been carted , on to this road and it is at present being widened wherever possible. M.H. Rotoma-Pikowai Road. — A considerable amount of maintenance has been carried out on this road oaving to the continuous wet weather bringing down large slips. II.M. Tauranga Road. — The Dry Bridge has been replaced by a tunnel lCOft x 5ft x. 5ft and a filling of approximately 8000 cubic yards. The Awahou Bridge is being replaced by a R.S. joist bridge on hardwood piles. The Rerenga Bridge is being replaced by a tunnel 210ft x 8ft x 8ft and ihe filling has been commenced. These chree bridges were in a bad state of lepair. The cost of renewing the Rerenga Bridge and Dry Bridge would have been about £2,200, whereas the c:st to the council will not exceed £100. Ragwort: — A large number of unemployed were engaged in cutting i and pulling ragwort. Authority was ' received from the Unemployment De- . partment to use these men but ow-ing . to the lateness of the season when this was received, full benefit was not ; obtained and the lack . of sodium , chlorate only made the work of a r temporary nature.
