HIRp AT HASTINGS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE WHEN SHELTER CATCHES ' ALIGHT CIGARETT]E! BUTT BLAMEp

— By Telegraph— Copyright),

Hastings, Thursday. The framework and upholstery of two Government Railway buses, valued at £2000 each were completely destoyed and more extensive damage to a smaller less valuable bus was done by fire which also completely* gutted a large wood and iron bui'lding in which they were housed to-night. The outbkeak occurred about 10 o'clock. So far, the origin is not definitely known, bivfc it is estimated that it was caused by a cigarette butt in one of the buses. The last bus was gamged a't seven o'clock, since when no one connected with the bus service had entered th'e shed. The shed was capable of accoftxmodating eight buses used on the Hast-ings-Napier run, hut the three buses damaged were the only ones there at the time of the outbreak. Th'e two larger buses had been on ' the run between Napier and Hastings for the past two years and were in good condition, hut the smaller one had been in use a much longer period. So good a hold did the flames have when the alarm was given that it was not possible to remove the buses to safety. The brigade was engaged for 40 minutes before the fire was quelled. The insurances are not available.
