CHANGE of control • " fjs % ma l REPRESENTATIONS MADE TO HON. E. A. RANSOM' BY MAYOR " . GIFT TO THE BOROUGH ' In the course of his interview with the Hon. E. A. Rarisom, Minister of Lands, yesterday evening, the Mayor | of Rotorua, Mr T. Jackson, mentioned the fact that there' was likely t'o be ' an alterat'i'on in regard to the cpritrol of King George V. "Hospital. ' Ue I pointed out to fhe Minister that* it fiiad been mooted that the present \ hospital should be handed ovef to the i Waikato Hospital Board. In this eonneetion, the Borough of Rotorua is very vitally eoncerned. The Pukeroa Hill had been given t'o the people of .Rotorua by the NgatiWhakaue tribe as a gift to the people of Rotorua to be used as ri recreation ground. When the Town Board which received the gift had been \fcaken over by the Tourist Department, the land still continued to be used for its original purpose as a reereation area, hut during the war, the area was made available for the purpose of establishirig a military hos-; pital. The understanding was certainly one. of pnrely. a temporary arrangement ,and the buildings erected were all of a temporary charaeter. Later, when the hospital was no longer needed for military purposes, it was taken over by the 'Health Department. Now that it was_proposed to probably reinove the buildings and hand over the institution to the Waikato Hospital Board, the Borough Council was eoncerned as to the final ownership of the land. The people of Rotorua were sfrongly convinced that if the hospital were abolished the land should revert to the Borough Council * to be held for the original purposes for -which it was given by the natives. After the Minister had asked several questions with regard to the available playing areas in the town, and the actual area which the council ixpected to f eceive baek, he promised to * submit favourably the representations 'made by the deputation to the Health Department, with Mr. Clinkard's support.
