ROTORUA TROTS
NEW CLUB HOLDS MOST SUCcESSFUL FIRST ~ - MEETING I ■ INTERESTING RACING Trotting was successfully launcbed upon its career in Rotorua when the Rotorua Trotting Club on Saturday held its inaugural trotting meeting at Arawa Park. Though. the fields were not large, the racing was always in- •, teresting and the exhibition of pac- ; ing by Mr. Wilfred Johnstone's champion mare Enawah was Very popular. She went a mile in 2.12 from a flying start, paced by Mr. R. P. Speddings' Beau Geste, and ridden by A. Ayres. There was a good attendance of the public and the weather was fine. The track, as witness the times, was , in first-class order. The cup with 1 Mr. and Mrs. Burch's canteen of cutlery, was won by F. J. Smith's Guid Hairst from Wee Macliine and it is .■ interesting to note that Smith also - won the Prdsident's with his imported mare Nell Yolo as well as driving l Wiriwhata to victory in the Rotoiti. In this race Smith won the whip donated by Mr. T. R. Byrne— the first > trophy he has won himself in New Zealand. C. Moran, of Hamilton / East, had a most suecessful meeting, , driving three winners Donum, Bonnie Direct and Edna Worthy. The Rotorua Municipal Band rendered a programme of music and the - racing was described through the Davies' Public Address system by the "Morning Post's" trotting writer, Mr. Crawford-W atson. Arrangements were very thorough and under the president, Mr. L. C. ■ftyan, and secretary, Mr. E. La Trobe Ilill, everything went off well. Wiriwhata Opens the Ball Only three horses paraded for the opening event, the Rotoiti Trot, and trotting very solidly Wirwhata proved 1 too good for Kohewah. Bingen Bell went to the front early and set a fair elip with Wiriwhata moving up and Kohewah slow to move away. After they had gone a mile, Wiriwhata had run to the front and Bingen Bell got > the stiteh. Though Kohewah put in j a claim in the last couple of furlongs, Wiriwhata trotted very solidly "to win hy five lengths with Bingen Bell 150 yards back. I Donum Paces Well Six started in the Hinemoa Han- . dicap and the race was an interesting one. Thora Thorpe was the only ; one who failed to strike a gait and she was not persevere^ with. Dillon 1 Audubon was also a bit slow to move off. Maud Chenault went to the front from Lady Fame, Donum, Mythorpe i. and Dillon Audubon. When they had covered about half a mile, Dillon ■ Audubon had got within striking dis- ; tance of Maud Chenault with Donum making up ground and Mythorpe handy. Passing the stand Donum and Maud Chenault led Dillon Audu;.bon and Mythorpe. There was not ;.much alteration except that Maud I .Chenault went out from the rails at ■/ the foot of the straight and Donum I slipped through the gap. Half a mile j from home Donum was in front of y Dillon Audubon, Lady Fame, Maud , ■ Chenault and Mythorpe. Donum won ! • with a bit in hand from Dillon Audu- ' j bon with Mythorpe four lengths away j ' and Lady Fame finishing well next. | ' Maud Chenault was next almost on ; terms with Lady Fame.
Guid Hairst's Cup The withdrawal of Fisher, Mythorpe and Our Peter left a bare • three in the cup, but the race was not without interest. All stepped off on the right foot and Guid Hairst assumed command from Te Mahanga ; with Wee Machine pacing smoothly. I Te Mahanga took .the le-ad at the end • of six furlongs and Guid Hairst fol- ; lowed with Wee Machine gaining on the leaders. Guid Hairst put in the I licks to put a ten length gap bej tween himself and Wee Machine., Te J Mahanga dropping back. At the foot | of the straight, Guid Hairst went • wide and Wee Machine got through | on the rails. When they turned for /home, Wee Machine was still in ;/ charge but Guid Hairst looked the i' fresher. "Wee Macliine skipped and j' Guid Hairst went on to win hy 15 ' lengths with Te Mahanga 100 yards ' away. j Nell Volo Tro£s Faultlessly j Nell Volo made no race of the President's Handicap when called upon j and trotted faultlessly all the way. ; Wiriwhata, who was penalised two seconds for his win in the Rotoiti Handicap, was first out and was joined by Kohewah after half a mile ;i haff been covered. Nell Volo commenced to gain on the leaders after the end of a mile and when they were ) on the back stretch she ran up to the leader and took command. She was not troubled to win from Wiri- , whata by two and a-half lengths with | Kohewah, who put in a skip or two, a /hundred yards back third. j Bonnie Direct's Pukeroa [ Bonnie Direct, who had been withj drawn from the cup, gave Cros Moi.ran a second winner v/hen she won J the Pukeroa Handicap from Thora : Thorpe in slow time. Thora Thorpe , struck a gait and went out into the 5 lead moving well ahead of Lady Fame ! i and Bonnie Direct. The pace Yras islow and Lady Fame, who had given signs of sticking on by running f ourth l in the Hinemoa, drifted. When the I back stretch was reached Bonnie Dir- , ect moved up to Thora Thorpe and | turned for home to win comfortably. j. The winner went very solidly and i Thora Thorpe showed a bit of pro- ! mise. Third to Cros Moran Cros Moran drove his third winner ' in the Whakarewarewa Handicap when Edna Worthy came home by one and a-half lengths from Mythorpe ' Mythorpe was_ the early leader from Te Mahanga, Edna Worthy and Wee : Machine and thus they raced for half ' a mile. Wee Machine commenced to move up, .but went to a break and Edna Worthy ran into the lead from Mythorpe with Te Mahanga dropping back. Edna Worthy had - command ! , from Mythorpe at the home bend with ;Wee Machine moving up. Wee Ma1 chine again 16ft his feet at the dis- i .tance and Edna Worthy went on to. win from Mythorpe with Te Mahanga three lengths back and Wee Machine ; five lengths away. It was a good race and had Wee Machine kept
/down he would have troubled the winner. • Detailed results : — ' ROTOITI HANDI'CAP Of £20. Unhoppled trotters; 15 miles; limit 8.5. 1 -WIRIWHATA, Mr. E. G. Gard- . . iner's ch g, age|l..
