A SHY V.C.
LET WORLD THINK HIM DEAD. Seng.t. Arthur H. L. Richardson, known as the "Shy V.C.," and so bashful that for 11 years he let his mother and the world think him dead, has died in a Liverp'ool ho'spital. I After winning the Victoriia Cross at WolversprUit, South Africa, in 1900, Richardson worked for 16 years in Liverpool as a street-car labourer, a. movie attendant and at other menial jobs. Because of his poverty he lived in obscurity and let relatives and friends believe him dead. He permitted a man in Scotland to pose as himself,
even. lettinigi him attend the King's gaxden party to V.C's as Sergeant Richardson. Stories about him became so numerous in 1924 that he revealed himself, but went back to obscurity. As a. youth he'went to Canada, and served for 15 years in th'e North-West Mounted Police. He next went to Africa and enlisted.
