MAN'S TIIRILLING ESCAPE j A thrilling escape from being toru ] to pieces by an infuriated leopaii ! was recently experienced by Peri Sun- i deram, Minister of Labour, Industry j and Commerce. He was returning in | his motor-car by night from an offi- j cial visit to Matale, a town near ; Kandy (Ceylon) , throngh wild jungle 1 country. Suddenly the car was jerk-' ■ed to a standstill, and Mr. Sunderam, j who had been dozing, found the cbau- \ ffeur gazing with terror into tbe i glowing eyes of a leopard in the | middle of the rOad ahead. Seizing his double-barrelled guo, the Minister sprang out of the car j and fired. The chauffeur manipnl- 1 ated the car head-lig'hts, andtheani- j
mai was seen erouchmg behmd a j tree. Again Mr. S'underam fired, kF he missed, and slowly the -leopard' i crept toward him. He backed toward \ the car, and was just in time to leap inside and bang the door. A seeord later the animal launched itself into. 1 the air. There was a terrific crash i as it struck the door with its fd j weight. Mr. Sunderam then fired \ } third shot through the windowaadi brought the animal down.
