11 ; / LAST WEEK'S GAMES

(By

.Ideal weather last Saturday made possible the commencement of the first games of the Rotorua Basketball Assoeiation's competition. In the initial game Huia made their debut against Waratah and although ' de-; feateji lyer.e by no means disgraced. Huia played .well and it was unfortunate that they should have drawn such a . strong team for their first game. However, they are quick and actiye, but just at present are lacking in team comhination. Waratah although only fielding six players gave a spirited display throughout thegame and the long, accurate goal i shooting of B. Vaughan was a pleasure to watch. The game ended, Waratah 17, Huia 5. Referee, -Mrs. Guy. H.S.O.S. A v. Ngongotaha , Old students defeated Ngongotaha by 16 goals to 5. The game was not very fast, as Ngongotaha have had difficulty in replacing members of last year's team and th'e fact that | the majority of players on Saturday were playing together for the first time, materially affected their style. In this game there was foo much overeagerness in obtaining the ball, thus causing an excess of pushing and b'umping. This may be attributed to the soft surface of the field, but for 'future guidance players must avoid unnecessary personal contact. Miss J. Greig was the referee. Kowhai v. H.S.O.S. B Kowhai showed much improved fform and had their opponents on ;the defence throughout the game. With J. Prenter in the goal third, and (the addition of C. .Cronin and A. j Hill to this third, a decided improve- | ment has resulted, both as regard 'shooting and passing. Old students B | also have new players and when they jhave worked up a reliable combinajtion and the goal-throwers gain a litftle more accuracy, they will be a J strong team. The game ended in a I win for Kowhai by 17 goals to 8. Mrs. I Guy refereed. 1, Executive Meeting A meeting of the committee was held last Monday evening. Those present were: — Mrs. Guy, Misses J. Grieg, B. Chambers, F. Bates, D. Emeny, I. Anderson, M. Paterson, and Y. Ford. Players in two teams playing in last Saturday's matches entered the 'field without wearing their club colr (ours. As both teams were wearing , the same unif orm it was diffieult for 'the referee to keep a fair check on 'the game. Captains ai)d delegates 'attending the meeting were asked to -stress the necessity of players wear'ing the club eolours when on the 'field.

Property has been found left be- . ;hind after matches. As this entails a. great deal of inconvenience it was ' unanimously agreed to institute a "lost property pound," and property 'limpounded to be released on the payment of 3d which amount will be r credited to the assoeiation's funds. . Heavy bookings made it inadvisable to hold the basketball dance on May 24 as planned. In consequence the dance will now be held on the first suitable date in June. It was agreed to postpone all games next Saturday on account of the trotting meeting at | Arawa Park. I Wednesday Competition I This competition will commence on Wednesday afternoon next and clubp /are urgently requested to forward all i applications for affiliation to the sec- ! retary before the end of this week. f The fixtures for above games will b.e published in next Tuesday's issue of the "Morning Post."
