— By Telegraph— CnpjTignt).

IRec. May 18, 8 p-.m. - Ney York, May 17. While Americans, including officials at Washington, are viewing Herr Hitler's speech as being nxore conciliatory than had been expected, the distrust laroused ,by Nazi Germany has hardly yet been dispelled. The Hearst press,- although distinctly anti-French, will say to-xnor-row: "To speak frankly, Herr Hitler xs the type that ermany wants. That is perhaps Germany's position, but we Americans .believe fervently in the igospel of liberty and independence. We do not want to participate in any new international set up which will xnake our national welfare eontingent on the thoughts axxd spoken words of the Nazi leader." The New York Tirnes in a leader to-day will say, : "As far as words go, Herr Hitler has done much to reassure opinion of other nations, but we will not cease to ask whethei* appx'opriate deeds are to follow. "A great deal xnore is necessary to convince the world that Germany seeks, not only peace within her terl'itories, but civilised huniane methods of Government within them."
