PRESENT OPENING HOUR NOT TO BE ALTERED jubileie' celebrations

A meeting of the Te Puke School Gommittee was held in the Town Board Oilice -on Friday night, there being present Messrs. W. O. Knight (chairman), F. Palmer, A. M. Ryburn, R. Williams, J. Courtney, E. V. Sharp, V. Bayliss and F. E. Gemming (secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and. a numbei; of accounts were passed for payment. The secretary read replies from the Minister of Education and the Auckland Education Boiard, relative* to protests recently forwarded through the school commdttee against the policy of refusing attendance at the State schools -of children not over five years of age. The replies stated that the protests. had been. forwarded on to the Education Department for consideration. The Auckland Eduoation Board also wrote in connection with the proposed jubilee celehrations of the Te Puke school, advising' that the official records fix the opening of the school at j September 24, 1883-. Mr. W. Sullivan , being the first headmaster. Vdsiting Committee: Messrs Rybnrn and Sharp were appointed as visiting committee for the ensuing month. School Opening Hours The meeting dealt with the recornmendation sent forward from the recent meeting of householders that the school openinjg hour be fixed at 9.30 l a.m. all the year round, instead of the present hours which are 9 a.m. in winter and 9.30 a.m. in summertime. The question was discussed at considerable length, and it was finally decided that the interests of the majority of pupils would best he sarved by adhering to the present hours. The question of continuing the practice of supplying the pupils with cocoa during the winter month 3 was imentioned and it was left dn the hands of Mr. Knight to malce the necessary arrangements with the teaching staff. Delqgates' report: The chairman reported that he and Mr. Palmer had attended the 'annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty School Committees' Association, which was held at Whakatane on Monday, May 8, and he advised concerning the various matters which had been dealt with at the conference.
